The Chimp Paradox: The Acclaimed Mind Management Programme to Help You Achieve Success, Confidence and Happiness (Unabridged) – Prof Steve Peters

Tried so hard

I really really tried with this as an audiobook as I could see where the author was going and he actually made some genuinely insightful points that made me think.

The condescending tone however had me feeling like I was a five year old. It would have been perfectly acceptable to talk about the limbic brain without having to resort to calling it my chimp. Grown adults can be talked to as such.

As I said I tried and tried but it left me wanting to reach for my car door handle and eject rather than continue for another chapter.

Could Dr Peters write one for grown ups?

Excellent

I have to say that I couldn’t disagree more with the review below, Steve has to make it clear for us simple folk to understand…

I’m 300 minutes into this audio book and already it has helped me with a number of situations where previously I would reacted in a different way. For example, for my job I have to fly quite regularly and whilst I’m an ok flier at the first sign of turbulence I normally break into a cold sweat and start clutching tightly to the arm rests. Last week I flew 4 times (first time since starting the book) and encountered varying degrees of turbulence, but not at any stage did it bother me or did I fear for my safety.. At one point I looked over and saw a guy clutching the arm rests and thought that used to be me a month ago.

This is a great book, slow going at times and I sometimes have to rewind to make sure understand a point, but everyone should give it a go as it will definitely change parts of your life.
